For the past two years US News and World Report has rated the Harrisburg and Lancaster metro areas among the top three “best places to retire” in the US. In 2024, Harrisburg (#1) edged out Lancaster which held the top spot in 2023. That these regions ranked highly in desirable attributes for a retirement destination is not at all surprising to us living in south central Pennsylvania. While less densely populated areas such as ours were excluded from the survey, considering we’re an estimated half-hour’s drive to both cities and nestled in lovely rural Lebanon Valley, one could argue we enjoy the sweetest spot of all.

If growth predictions hold, Lebanon County’s population is expected to continue to increase (5th largest percent growth of PA’s 67 counties) and retirement of aging boomers continues to be a significant factor. What distinguishes our Alden Place/Northgate community is the generous spirit and engagement of its residents—for coming to a neighbor’s aid, for creating and participating in social activities, and for tending to our neighborhood’s infrastructure and interests. It is our hope that this website will provide an additional resource in furthering such efforts.
